Construction students at Thamesview Vocational Centre were given a "real life" learning experience when they attended a lesson on site in Southfields, Gravesend, where we are building new affordable homes. In a joint initiative with the centre, we also donated site safety clothing for the students to use during their practical sessions, and have facilitated the lessons on our site.
Eight groups of around 15 students studying construction crafts at the centre visited the site for a lesson related to the course they were undertaking. The students, aged from 14-16 years, were studying a range of courses from vocational GCSEs in Construction to the BTEC Level 2 course.
Thamesview Vocational Centre, which is based at Thamesview School in Gravesend, opened its doors last year. The centre gives local students aged 14-16 the opportunity to study for vocational qualifications whilst still at school.
In addition to providing the training on site, we also recruited an apprentice from North West Kent College, which is linked with the Thamesview Vocational Centre.
