Cancer Research is the world's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. One of the many methods of raising money is from consumers who visit the hundreds of Cancer UK charity shops across the country.
Working locally to the area maintaining over 16000 homes for ASG, Rydon Maintenance were keen to demonstrate their commitment to achieving their target of 4 hours volunteer time per employee per year and lend the Cancer UK shop in Haywards Heath a helping hand in improving their facilities.....
So, it began with ‘Project Basement'!
The storage area for the shop is the basement - an overcrowded, tired looking room. The staff there worked extremely hard to keep on top of all the donations that came in and to keep the area as organised as possible, however the Maintenance team thought they could offer a re-vamp that would make a huge difference.
Across three days, a team from Rydon Maintenance put their work on hold and swapped their office clothes for a set of overalls, some tools and a huge pot of paint! The refurbishment consisted of completely clearing and emptying the basement, boxing everything in sight, installing new partitions, shelving, decorating and clearing down the cobwebs!
Team A, also known as the ‘Sister-hood!', removed all fixtures and fittings, partitions and shelving, sanded all woodwork down and prepared the walls for the redecoration - so in other words we did the hard work!
Team B (The boys!) then came on board and completely fitted out the room with new storage areas and shelving, carried out the redecoration and transformed the basement into a refreshing environment that the staff could properly manage.
By the time we completed we added a total of 136 hours to our volunteering target.
"The work Rydon have carried out has made everyday shop operations much more pleasant and organised. In addition, efficiency in stocking our shop floor has improved dramatically. We here at CR-UK in Haywards Heath believe this will help us in raising even more money for our scientists and we can't thank you guys enough."

‘Everyone who put themselves forward to be involved made an invaluable contribution and worked extremely hard. Personally, I found the whole experience immensely rewarding and hopefully it will give others the confidence to carry out similar projects of their own.' Steve Blake, Construction Manager, Rydon Maintenance
