Rydon completes voluntary decoration of Walter Sickert Community Centre on the Marquess estate

Corporate responsibility has long been embedded in the way we do things at Rydon - because we genuinely believe it's the right thing to do. Our key areas of focus are the local community, the environment, health and safety and our people.

Looking after the environment and positively contributing towards its enhancement is a rewarding part of our business and has become integrated into every project that we work on.

In support of this, the North London Region of Rydon Maintenance has joined up with Islington's Community and Service Development Team, as part of the drive to improve our links within the community.

Taking Action

Working closely with the Community Development Team, we approached the community centre committee for suggestions/ideas for possible projects around the area. It was agreed that we would decorate the community centre and provide the labour for free. We asked our operatives, office based staff and subcontractors to volunteer their time towards the project. In total 3 office based staff, 2 apprentices and 2 specialist sub-contractors contributed their time and efforts and ensured the centre was decorated to the highest of standards.

The project took two weeks to complete, and was reopened on 01st March 2010 by the Community Development Team. Everyone was really pleased, and appreciated the end result. The re-decoration of the community centre has provided a refreshed atmosphere, enjoyed by all, and has given the employees of Rydon Maintenance a sense of achievement by giving back to the community!

The joint approach Rydon has formed with Islington's Community and Service Development Team will ensure an ongoing mutual benefit to all those living within the local borough- all a result of Rydon's embedded philosophy of ‘doing well through doing good'.

"Once the community centre had been redecorated, it looked really nice and the local people that use it regularly were very happy with our work. It felt good to put something back into the community as I myself, am born and bread in Islington" Daniel Sparks, Apprentice
