Work Experience a Success

 Work Experience a Success

Published: January 2009

In October 2008 the team at Rydon Maintenance organised two taster days in partnership with Downland Housing Association (part of the Affinity Group) to provide apprentice training opportunities within our communities. The two days received 24 attendees.

Following the success of these, all participants were invited back for two weeks' work experience from the 1 - 12 December 2008. 11 candidates from the Brighton and Burgess Hill community attended and quickly received hands on training, by attending to responsive repairs at some of Downland's properties. They were guided every step of the way by Rydon operatives who were acting as mentors throughout the two week period. Some of the works included carrying out repairs in plumbing, carpentry and some plastering tasks. In February, it is to be confirmed that two of the participating work experience group are to become potential operatives themselves, joining Rydon on a "Construction Apprenticeship Scheme." This allows them to attend college one day a week and work with selected mentors for the remaining four days.

Electrical contractor, J.P. Garrett's took on 3 work experience candidates, who in turn carried out day-to day responsive repairs and some void works. An apprenticeship place was made available for one individual to take up an electrical course.
