Relish wins the Sustainable Housing 2010 Award

Published: November 2010

Residents 4 Low Impact Sustainable Homes (RELISH TM) has won the Energy Saving Initiative of the Year award at the Sustainable Housing 2010 Awards. RelishTM is a consortium founded by Worthing Homes, a registered social housing provider; Faithorn Farrell Tims, specialist surveying consultants (FFT) and Rydon, a nationwide contractor with a significant commitment to refurbishment, to provide a cost-efficient solution to reducing energy consumption in occupied homes.

RelishTM was announced the winner at an event held on 22nd October 2010 at the London Hilton, Park Lane, which was attended by 600 leading construction professionals. The event was hosted by comedian, writer and climate change campaigner Mark Watson and jointly arranged by Inside Housing magazine and the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH).

The RelishTM award was based on a 12-month pilot project to measure the effects of retrofitting older housing and supporting residents with advice and education. RelishTM refurbished four of Worthing's existing homes using a variety of techniques, then measured the energy savings each home achieved following the improvement works. The aim was to assess which techniques are the most environmentally friendly and cost effective and to inform homeowners of their options.

Andrew Leatherland, head of the project for Rydon, said: "What we've learnt from this project could make a substantial contribution to reducing carbon emissions from all existing housing, not just housing in the social sector. The results give us compelling data to present to current and potential clients."

RelishTM has also won the London and South East regional Legacy (Sustainability) Award and is the first project to be accredited with the new Constructing Excellence Innovation in Practice status. The project is in the running for the Constructing Excellence National Awards Final being held in London on the 19th November 2010.
