 Rydon awarded £5 million school contract in 
 North London

Rydon has been awarded a £5.1mn construction contract to expand the St John & St James' Primary School in Edmonton, North London.

The expansion of the St John & St James' Primary School, designed by Scabal architects, will enable the school to increase its pupil numbers from 230 to 420 and will also include 56 places for full-time nursery pupils. Work is commencing immediately and should be completed by August 2011.

The project involves the construction of a new main building totalling 1950m2 which will include new classrooms, a small hall and atrium. An environmentally friendly sedum green roof has been incorporated into the design which will provide insulation and a habitat for wildlife. Rydon will also be involved in the refurbishment of the existing 1970s school which is approximately 863m2.

Surrounding the new building will be an assortment of new play areas designed for different age groups which will be bordered by greenery. The total external area, including the landscaped playgrounds and car park area will measure approximately 4000m2
