Construction has now reached its highest point at Orchard Way in East Grinstead, a £3.2 million development of 22 one- and two-bedroom apartments built by Rydon Construction, which is replacing ex-council buildings with modern, affordable homes.
To mark the building's ‘topping out', a sprig of oak was attached to the final truss of the building at the highest point. This is a long-standing tradition established to thank workers for their efforts, to honour the safe construction of the building and bring good luck to future occupants.
Orchard Way will provide 14 homes for shared ownership and eight as rental accommodation, all of which will be available through Saxon Weald housing association.
Roy Buckley, Project Manager at Rydon Construction, comments "By replacing these tired, energy wasteful buildings with comfortable, modern housing, we are not only providing affordable, quality homes, but helping residents to save on energy costs. As a local company, based in Forest Row, our team members pass by these homes regularly and we take pride in being able to use our knowledge and expertise to benefit our community."
In addition to their affordability, the new properties are being built to achieve an Eco Homes ‘Very Good' rating.
Orchard Way is located within a few minute's walk of East Grinstead train station, which offers a regular service to London Victoria in under an hour.
The staggered three-and six-storey timber framed building will be complete by Autumn 2009.
