Work starts on Eden Primary Free School

Published: October 2011

Construction work on the Eden Primary School, in Muswell Hill, started on 28th September. This is one of the first new-build free school created by the Government's Free School initiative and procured through the national Contractors' Framework.

The scheme comprises the construction of a new 1FE Jewish Primary School including landscaping to provide an external area for the pupils. In addition to the work on the new school, during this year's summer school holidays, Rydon has completed the refurbishment of temporary accommodation in a neighbouring building to accommodate the pupils in teaching facilities during the construction works.

Prior to winning the contract and to ensure that the design of the scheme was fit for purpose, Rydon underwent extensive engagement workshops, enabling us to produce a design which gets the very best from the tight budget available and ensures that the school is aesthetically pleasing whilst providing a good learning environment.

On selecting Rydon for the scheme, Peter Kessler, Chair of Directors for Eden Primary, said: "Rydon's designs for our new school are both original and inspiring. They perfectly match our ambition to create a school that gives children an enjoyable, natural and special place to learn, play and grow."

The new school will be constructed using a concrete frame with timber cladding, incorporating air source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels to achieve a BREEAM rating of 'Very Good'. In addition to the sustainable technologies incorporated into the design, Rydon will be using trees cut down during site preparation to create seating in the playground.

Work is due to be competed in August 2012, in time for the start of the next academic year.
