Contract Name: The Royal Veterinary College, Hawkshead and Camden
Contract Sum: £4,260,275 (total)
Contract Period: Hawkshead 40 Weeks Camden 63 Weeks
Architect: The Devereux Partnership
Client: The Royal Veterinary College
Following an open tender for a partnership with The Royal Veterinary College, Rydon was selected as Preferred Partner to carry out the design and construction of 101 study bedrooms on the College's campus at Hawkshead Lane, which were completed in October 1999.
Within the original proposals, funding was to be provided by the Rydon Group in partnership with Swan Housing Association; a relationship which has received further success as Preferred Bidder for the provision of key worker accommodation for Norfolk and Norwich Healthcare NHS Trust, valued at £8.0 million. However, within the proposals for The Royal Veterinary College, alternative funding was made available through the College's own resources and the contract was amended to form a partnership arrangement.
Following completion of the Hawkshead scheme, Rydon was invited to undertake the provision of an additional 84 study bedrooms on the campus in Royal College Street, Camden.
This accommodation is provided in a 4-storey block, with all bedrooms having en-suite facilities. As a time saving method, bathroom pods, imported from France, were incorporated into the construction process.
The project was completed in September 2001, to coincide with the College's commencement of term.
