Contract Name: Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls
Contract Sum: £8.5 million (School) £13 million (Residential)
Contract Period: 98 Weeks (School)
Architect: Aedas Architects Ltd
This is a unique opportunity for Rydon to build a new school for Tonbridge Grammar School for Girls, in conjunction with a residential development on land currently owned by the School.
The School, one of the top 10 grammar schools in the country, has an outstanding reputation but is currently housed in old, dilapidated buildings, including a number of dispersed post war 'temporary' structures.
Such is the state of the buildings, that only significant funding can bring the buildings up to the standard necessary for the School to maintain its high performance levels in future years. The Ofsted Inspector's report of April 2002, singled out the condition of the school buildings as their only significant criticism and charged the Governors with taking the necessary steps to rectify this.
The arrangement reached with Rydon, is one of a 'land swap'. In exchange for a section of school brownfield land designated in the local plan for potential development, Rydon will provide the school with a new building and will refurbish a significant part of the main structure of the old building.
The value of the new school building work has been set at £8.6 million.
Works commenced on site in November 2008.
