A celebration has marked the 500th home to be completed for affordable rent since construction started at the regeneration of Durand Close in Sutton.

Marking 11 years of partnership working on the sites that comprise the scheme, Rydon and Clarion Housing Group (formerly Affinity Sutton) came together with local dignitaries on Thursday 1st December to mark the milestone achievement that has been improving the lives of local people and includes a range of community facilities including the Riverside Centre.

The London Borough of Sutton earmarked the original Durand Close estate for demolition and redevelopment in 1999 following discussions with its residents. Rydon and housing association Affinity Sutton were selected successfully at competition in 2002 to bring their vision forward to transform the local area.

The development team is known as the Lavender Partnership, named after the Lavender fields that were once prevalent in the Carshalton area, and will ultimately deliver 650 new homes as part of the scheme.

The event marking these achievements over the past eleven years was held in 21 Green Wrythe Crescent – the 500th home to be completed.

Green Wrythe Crescent also represents one of the last rows of Orlit housing within the scheme to be redeveloped. Orlit homes are prefabricated post war housing built in the 40s and 50s, which had structurally deteriorated over time and became uneconomic to refurbish.

Rydon’s team at Durand Close has consistently won top awards for their approach to Durand’s redevelopment and positive engagement with the local community. This year they secured a Gold award from the Considerate Constructor’s Scheme, one of only a handful to secure this accolade for their hard work.
