A ground breaking ceremony has marked the start of work to a new £9m development in Worle, North Somerset, which will provide a hub of specialist dementia support and housing services in the local area.
Bristol-based Rydon is on site delivering the new extra care scheme for Alliance Homes Group. It represents the single largest new build project to date for the community-based social enterprise.
Colleagues from both organisations gathered to celebrate putting the first spade in the ground, officially starting work.
Paul Barber, Regional Director from Rydon, commented: “This extra care development will become an important resource for Worle, providing much needed facilities for the local community.”
“We are very pleased to celebrate this first milestone and look forward to working alongside Alliance Homes Group to deliver this project to a high standard. During its delivery, Rydon will also bring an economic boost by offering opportunities for local people and businesses.”
Clive Bodley, Alliance Homes Group Chief Executive added: ”This is an important project for the Group which now provides support and care services to around 1,500 people to support them to achieve or maintain levels of independence in their lives. We look forward to welcoming the first residents next year.”
The new facility will provide 65 self-contained flats and a range of specialist dementia services. These will include a Wellbeing Centre and a number of community resources.
Externally, landscaped gardens will surround the new building and upper levels will feature balcony areas with sun shading.
The scheme has been developed in a partnership between Alliance Homes Group, North Somerset Council and NHS North Somerset and has also received funding from the Homes and Communities Agency.
The new development is being constructed to a BREEAM ‘Very Good’ environmental rating and will open September 2016.
