Construction starts at new NHS Swindon Health Centre

Rydon has started work on the construction of the new NHS Swindon Health Centre.

The “breaking ground” event, held on Monday 18 January, was attended by key figures who have been involved in the ten year development of plans, including local Councillors, GPs, key health services, and Healthwatch Swindon.

The new Swindon Health Centre on Fleming Way is due to open in Spring 2017 and is being built by Rydon for Muse Developments. It will be a larger, more modern health centre which will replace the Carfax Street Health Centre. NHS Property Services are responsible for delivering the project, supported by NHS England, NHS Swindon CCG and Public Health Swindon.

The new health centre will form part of the Kimmerfields development and will sit alongside the already constructed new 850-space multi-storey car park and assisted living residential building, delivered as part of the first phase.

The health centre will provide a full range of community and enhanced primary care services to over 22,000 registered patients, over 36,000 unregistered and a walk-in centre for the local population and the wider area. The new health centre will be built over four levels which will offer more patient services than those currently available at Carfax Street Health Centre, with plans to include a pharmacy, two GP practices, dental, podiatry and a variety of community health services.

Bob Sanderson, Director of Urgent Care at Carfax Street Health Centre said: “We are delighted that work is now imminent on the building of the new Swindon Health Centre.  The £10m centre will cover 27,000 square feet and provide GP services, community and dental services as well as specialist services and a pharmacy, all under one town centre roof that will improve the health and wellbeing of the population of Swindon in a modern, safe and high quality environment”. 

Dr Peter Crouch, Clinical Chair of Swindon CCG, said: “This has been a long-awaited project and it will be exciting to see construction get underway.  Delivery of this project was made possible through the contributions of all involved parties, as well as some sheer determination and personal commitment to make it happen.”

John Follows, Regional Asset Manager for NHS Property Services, said: “It’s great to see work starting on this superb health centre, and by taking a 20-year lease we are ensuring healthcare commissioners can provide services in a high quality facility to meet the changing needs of patients and the NHS for many years to come.”
