August 2013
Community garden projects around Islington have benefitted from makeovers thanks to Rydon volunteers.
Rydon’s team working on the Partners for Improvement contract, who provide day-to-day repairs for the London Borough, have invested many hours of their own time working on gardens and community spaces with vulnerable residents who cannot maintain their own plots.
In particular they have been helping with clearance and putting their construction and maintenance skills to create new outdoor spaces.
Some of their projects include:
St Saviours Church, Finsbury Park
A disused garden at St Saviours Church in Finsbury Park received a make-over by three Rydon supervisors, who spent their weekend with Partners for Islington staff creating large wooden planters and a new outdoor area. Previously overgrown, the spaces will now be used by local residents as allotments for growing plants and vegetables.
Elderly resident, Islington
A 93 year old disabled resident saw his very overgrown garden cleared and made into a pleasant outdoor space once again. The seven-strong volunteer team organised a large skip, which they filled right to the top and laid a weed-suppressing mat with wood chips to prevent further growth.
Partners for Islington have lined up a keen amateur gardener, who previously did not have the use of a garden in Islington who will maintain the space and grow produce – a perfect solution!
… future projects
More projects are planned in the coming weeks including clearing another overgrown garden to provide enough access for tree surgeons to get access to the tress to prune and manage them.
