December 2014
Rydon proudly welcomed His Royal Highness, The Prince of Wales, to the Packington estate in Islington to launch a new report by the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community that has put the spotlight on consultation-led development in London.
The report, “Housing Communities: What People Want” encapsulates the efforts of the Prince’s Foundation For Building Community to encourage sustainable development by placing community engagement at the heart of meeting the quality and, significantly, the quantity, of the UK’s housing requirements.
Recognising the successful partnership between Rydon and Hyde, the Packington estate was chosen as an appropriate setting to launch the report and was described by the Foundation as an ‘exemplary’ scheme.
The Prince was joined by Housing Minister, Brandon Lewis, who called the regeneration of the estate “a prime example of what can be achieved”.
During the event, Packington’s Arc Community Centre was the venue for a discussion hosted by Hyde on overcoming the barriers to regenerating post-war housing estates to help address London’s housing shortage. Alongside the Prince, the debate involved representatives from Hyde, Rydon, the GLA, the HCA, several London boroughs, and the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community. A follow up report is in production to record the recommendations considered on the day.
The Prince had the opportunity to meet some of those who had benefitted from the regeneration, including residents and young apprentices who had successfully completed the ‘Get Into Construction programmes which Rydon has run on the regeneration scheme in partnership with The Prince’s Trust and Hyde.
Rydon is working in partnership with Hyde to transform the Packington estate across an eight-year, six-phase programme to replace 538 structurally defective flats with 791 mixed-tenure houses and flats. The project is being delivered with residents in occupation and Phase 4 is currently underway.
More information on the report can be found through the Prince’s Foundation For Building Community website.
