Islington's Packington Estate, currently undergoing an eight-year programme of regeneration by Rydon, has been put forward for a major award that also counts the Olympic Park and Leicester Square amongst the shortlist.

The London Planning Awards recognise excellence in urban development across the capital and has shortlisted Packington in the 'Best new place to live category'. The annual awards, dubbed the 'Oscars' of the planning and development sector, are presented by Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who is also on the panel of judges which include London Councils and the Royal Town Planning Institute.

Packington was transferred to the Hyde Group in 2007 by Islington Council. Hyde have been working in partnership with Rydon to demolish the 1960's Estate, comprising 538 structurally defective flats, and replace them with 791 new mixed-tenure homes.

The new buildings depict a variety of modern and traditional design, which blend in with neighbouring Georgian terraces. The Victorian street pattern is also being reinstated, two new public squares created as well as a community centre, youth centre and adventure playground.

Mark Mitchener, Managing Director of Rydon Construction commented:

"We're working on phase three of eight at the moment, so to be nominated at such an early stage in Packington's regeneration is fantastic recognition for everyone who has been a part of this project. The masterplan for the Estate was always designed with local people in mind - to give them a community with real identity and that provides infrastructure to help them improve their lives."
