The Prince’s Trust and Rydon are encouraging unemployed young people from Islington to take part in a free construction course, which will give them the skills and qualifications they need to work in the industry.

The youth charity’s two-week ‘Get into Construction’ course based at the Packington Estate, one of Islington’s biggest construction projects, is being delivered by Rydon in partnership with The Hyde Group.

The construction programme will give unemployed young people, aged 18 to 25, the chance to try out a number of practical skills in construction, including: bricklaying, dry lining, carpentry, electrics and plumbing. The young people will also work towards their CSCS card – an essential health and safety qualification needed to work on a construction site.

In addition to this, they’ll also have the opportunity to improve their teamwork and communication skills, along with learning interview and CV techniques – all of which will boost their confidence.

The programme starts with a half-day information session on 25 March and a full taster day on 27 March. The course will then run from 31 March – 11 April. Travel and lunch expenses will be reimbursed.

Following the course, each young people will receive six months support from The Prince’s Trust to assist them in moving into sustainable employment within the industry.
