Primary school pupils played a role in the redevelopment of their own school by officially naming the machines that are working on the school construction site and learning about safety and the construction process.
Seven JCBs, diggers and dumpers were been given wild and wacky names, now emblazoned on the side of the machines working hard at Beacon Rise Primary School in Kingswood, which is undergoing a large expansion by Rydon.
During the event, the pupils had the opportunity to sit inside the machines and learn about the role each played in creating a new building with the help of the Considerate Constructors Scheme safety mascot Ivor Goodsite.
The names chosen included Fix It Felix, Crushing Doris, Mucky Trucky, Diggy, Crispy, Gary and Dennis. Competition winners were each presented with a certificate and their very own set of construction safety equipment, including a hi-visibility vest and helmet.
Chris Thomas, Headteacher commented:
“We’ve really enjoyed working in partnership with Rydon to create a learning environment and restaurant for 180 additional pupils. We are confident the new building will match Beacon Rise’s ‘Outstanding’ provision. The pupils are excited to watch their new classrooms grow and can’t wait to see the finished building.”
Rydon’s site team also attended a school assembly to chat to the pupils and explain the dangers of a construction site, assisted by Ivor Goodsite, who helped to show what safety equipment construction workers must wear.
Rydon is working at Beacon Rise Primary School to deliver a large new six-classroom block, remodelling of offices, staff rooms as well as an extension to the kitchens at the school.
Throughout the project the School and Rydon site team have worked closely together to ensure the safety of the pupils, parents and staff. The children’s safety has taken top priority in all of the activities carried out on site thanks to good planning and liaison between Rydon and the school.
