The Rydon team at Hazelhurst Court joined Phoenix Community Housing, local dignitaries and residents for a sky high gardening session to mark an important stage in the creation of sixty new homes for older people in south London.

The Lewisham landlord and Rydon hosted a ‘topping out’ ceremony to celebrate the construction of the new development at Hazelhurst Court reaching its highest point.

The Mayor of Lewisham Sir Steve Bullock was among those celebrating the new development of 60 homes on Wednesday 2 November.

The ‘extra care’ homes at Hazelhurst Court will allow older people to live independently in secure and comfortable accommodation, with tailored support on hand to meet their individual and changing care needs.

Part funded by the Mayor of London and Lewisham Council, the new homes are Phoenix’s first residential development with further schemes planned in the south of Lewisham.

Phoenix Chief Executive Jim Ripley said: “There is a huge housing shortage across London and this is felt acutely in Lewisham, where more than 9,000 households are currently on the housing waiting list.

“We want to play our part in tackling this shortage and are very proud to celebrate the topping out of our first residential development at Hazelhurst Court. Once completed, these homes will help dozens of older people to live independently with the reassurance of ready access to care that meets their needs.”

Mark Mitchener, Managing Director for Rydon Construction, added: "Providing bright, spacious, high quality homes that enable people to enjoy better quality living is something we are proud of at Rydon.

“Topping Out at Hazelhurst Court has been a great opportunity for our team to show local residents and Phoenix how this development is taking shape and we look forward to delivering the finished building for the benefit of the local community."

Construction of the homes, which are being built by Rydon began in late 2015. The new homes will be available for affordable rent from summer 2017.
