The first phase of the £50m regeneration of the Bacton Low Rise estate in Camden has been officially unveiled during a celebration held with local residents and councillors.
Rydon started work in 2014 on the major redevelopment for the London Borough of Camden to demolish the old estate, which suffered from inefficient design and is in poor condition, making way for 290 new homes comprising 176 for open market sale, 104 for affordable rent and 10 for shared ownership.
The grand opening saw new residents take part in a ribbon cutting ceremony with staff from Rydon, the TRA (Tenants and Residents Association), local councillors, and representatives from Camden Council.
The celebrations continued in the neighbouring TRA hall where Ivor Goodsite, the construction industry mascot, and a magician entertained local children.
Phase 1 of the project comprises 44 one to five bedroom homes across two blocks. Within this phase are a mixture of homes for private sale and affordable rent, including three storey town houses, maisonettes and flats.
People who lived in the old estate as well as other local families have already been settled into the new homes.
Included within this phase were a number of specially adapted disabled flats, a children’s playground and secure cycle storage.
Phase 2 and 3 of the project will continue through 2016 and beyond, comprising the remaining 246 homes.
Cllr Hayward, Leader of the Council said:
“This is the first time Camden has been able to build new council homes in Gospel Oak for over 20 years. It’s a huge step in the regeneration of the area at a time when we are facing an affordable housing crisis.”
“This development is a brilliant example of resident-led regeneration and I’d like to say a huge thank you to the commitment and hard work of the Bacton Low Rise TRA for working with us to deliver this impressive re-development scheme. I hope everyone enjoys their Christmas break in their homes.”
The Bacton Low Rise TRA, said:
"It been hard work getting to where we are today, but a big achievement working as a team and getting support from the great community on the estate. It's going to be lovely to move into the new homes just before Christmas".
Sarah Robbins, TRA member, added:
"In the first time in 21 years I will have a new council home with no overcrowding"
