North Bristol NHS Trust has appointed Rydon on a £2.5m project to build two new cancer care & support centres at Southmead Hospital Bristol.

Bringing all breast care services under one roof, the Bristol Breast Care Centre will be the first of its type in the area, providing screening, diagnosis and after-care support. A new Macmillan Wellbeing Centre also forms part of the scheme, providing emotional, practical and financial support for people affected by any type of cancer, their families, friends and carers.

It is being built adjacent to the new Brunel Building, Southmead’s new £430m hospital, which opens in May 2014.

The centres will occupy one of the hospital’s original workhouse buildings that date back to the early 20th Century. Rydon is additionally carrying out remodelling works to an existing administration centre at the hospital.

Clinical staff and patients were consulted on the designs, which will bring a modern, bright and comfortable environment, split into distinct areas with exits into private courtyard spaces.

The new centres will open in May 2014.

Paul Barber, South West Regional Director for Rydon said:

“This project quite clearly means a lot to the local community, so we’re particularly proud to bring our expertise in healthcare and historic buildings to the development and look forward to handing over fantastic new facilities.”
