In March of this year, Craig Plowman, Site Supervisor for Rydon volunteered to participate on the popular BBC show DIY SOS: The Big Build, in which he helped change a family’s life for the better in Bristol.

The TV show enlists local tradesmen, suppliers and the larger community to fulfil building projects for deserving families. The episode of ‘The Big Build’ was aired on BBC One in June in which Craig joined presenter Nick Knowles alongside team regulars Billy Byrne, Mark Millar and around 200 tradespeople.

Over the course of nine days, the project enabled 24-year-old Ryan Pollard to transfer home after improving the family home to accommodate specially adapted access and facilities for his needs, after spending five years in a hospital since being diagnosed with a brain condition.

Commenting on his time with the project, Craig said; “It was a very worthwhile experience. It is rare to feel the type of togetherness that was evident from the first minute you arrive on site. The day was long (13 hours) and the work varied from putting up blinds, shelving and pictures to shovelling gravel.

I am lucky to be in a position that meant I could utilise my skills in carpentry to help change someone's life for the better. It was an emotional moment to see the family overwhelmed by what had been achieved and how it would shape their lives. It left me thinking that life should be more like that with communities coming together frequently to help out those in need.

Thank you for the opportunity to represent Rydon on the (DIY SOS) Big Build. It will be an experience I will remember for some time.”
