Rydon has successfully handed over Eden Primary, the first new-build school to be delivered through the Government's Free School initiative, to the Eden Primary Trust in London's Muswell Hill.
Pupils have started the term in the new building, the vision of Chair of Directors, Peter Kessler, a BAFTA award-winning former TV producer, who wanted to create a Jewish state primary school independent of any synagogue authority, but equally, open to the wider community, of all faiths and none.
Rydon delivered a turnkey package for the school, including design, planning, construction, landscaping, fit-out and furniture installation.
Daniel Moore, Contracts Manager for Rydon commented:
"Eden Primary has evolved from a piece of vacant land to a contemporary learning facility, reflecting the diversity of the local community and its surroundings. We are proud of the building we have handed over to the Eden Primary Trust and hope that it provides an inspiration for its pupils for many years to come."
Eden Primary's design, led by architect Hunters, has delivered a building and surrounding landscape with an organic design, connecting the outside environment with the interior. It has incorporated numerous external access points as well as several distinct outdoor learning and play areas.
It has been constructed using a concrete frame with western cedar cladding and shingled roof. The school has been designed to achieve a BREEAM 'Very Good' rating and contains sustainability features including photovoltaic panels and rainwater attenuation.
Accommodation comprises seven class-bases and numbers will grow incrementally every year to a capacity of 210 pupils, aged 4-11. The first 30 pupils started in the 2011 academic year and were housed in temporary accommodation at the neighbouring Fortismere School whilst construction work took place.
