September 2014
As part of the events celebrating the launch of the Community Café at the Green Man Lane regeneration project in West Ealing, a week long street art project took place to decorate the hoarding surrounding the latest phase of the £136m regeneration being delivered in a partnership between Rydon and A2Dominion.
Rydon’s site team worked with A2Dominion’s Community Investment Co-Ordinator Gregg Barrett to organise the event during the summer holiday. The project was led by Gabrielle - an inspirational artist from London West Bank with the support, hard work and creative talents of local residents.
The project began with the group of young people working on design ideas in the café one morning with help from Gregg and Gabrielle. A global theme quickly emerged and the young people drew up a list of different flags they wanted to see on the hoarding. The master piece was created in paint and the rainbow of nations emerged on the site hoarding, behind which the demolition of the old estate was taking place.
Completing the hoarding’s new look were some important safety notices, painted in the style of the art work and Gabrielle touched up the work just to make it neat and tidy on the final day. Those who were involved signed the art work themselves by putting their handprints on the final board.
Other events which ran during the launch of the Green Man Lane Community Café included Samba drumming, circus skills, fashion design and arts & crafts.
The Community Café is an important part of Green Man Lane’s regeneration as a new focal point for the local community. The events programme that kick started the launch of the café will continue with in partnership with OPEN Ealing arts group who will provide a range of theatre and arts activities for adults and children.
