Rydon was appointed by housing provider AmicusHorizon to create this new Extra Care scheme for older people in Sidley, East Sussex.
Known as The Orangery, the £8m scheme has been designed to meet HAPPI principles, and provides 58 self-contained units. The new homes comprise 30 one bed and 28 two bedroom suites available for shared ownership or affordable rent.
The 0.83 ha site is built on the site of the former Sidley Community Primary School and contains the following facilities that are typical of Extra Care housing:
As well as the main facility, The Orangery, AmicusHorizon have also created six 2 and 3 bedroom homes for private sale.
Rydon invited the former school children, who had moved to a nearby academy, to return to the site to design and paint the site hoarding, choosing a rainbow garden theme. Their work was entered in a national competition with the Considerate Constructors Scheme and became a finalist.
