The Sunshine Sevens tournament- sponsored by Rydon- returned to East Grinstead Rugby Club last weekend for its 51st year. The Sunshine Sevens started as a one day event in 1958 in order to raise money for local charity ‘Sunshine Home for the Blind’, that day £53 was raised. Over the years the tournament has expanded and is now the top charity sevens tournament in the South of England. This year alone it is expected to have raised over £10,000 to be split between three local charities.
This year’s three day tournament started Friday with a Under 10s school tag mixed rugby competition between six local Primary Schools, following on from this Saturday morning’s events consisted of the Under 18 and Under 15 girls’ tournament and the Under 15 boys. Saturday afternoon saw the Senior Ladies tournament. The final of the tournament was between early favourites Free Spirit Rugby Babes and last years winners Pink Ba Bas. Whilst both sides battled hard, the Pink Ba Bas had the final push that was needed to be named victors- winning 12-10. The final day hosted the Senior Mens tournament, amongst which were last year’s winners British Army. After a thrilling day of rugby, the final -between Wooden Spoon and Ruck-u-Spartans- was hard fought with Wooden Spoon scoring in the last minute of the game, making them 15-12 winners.
