Swanley, although close to London, is also a town in its own right, and the chosen location for Laxton Grange. It was once famous for horticulture, particularly fruit-growing, and the Laxton was a traditional English apple variety grown in the local orchards.
Today, there are still many orchards in the surrounding countryside, while Swanley has grown into a thriving centre benefiting from its excellent road connections and proximity to the city, coast and rural areas. The town centre has undergone some recent refurbishment and is a very pleasant place to shop. Parking is plentiful, and there is a wide range of retailers to choose from in the Swanley Centre and the High Street.
Swanley also has a surprising number of parks for a town of its size. These include lovely Swanley Park, perfect for young children with its miniature railway and paddling pool, Hextable Park, and Hextable Heritage Centre and Gardens, once the grounds of the horticultural college.
