This project consisted of a new 56-bed intermediate care home, health centre and day nursery, built under a design and build contract. Rydon carried out the works in four phases of construction facilitating the continuous operation of the existing health centre.
Phase 1: Comprised the provision of a temporary doctors' accommodation unit on a nearby local authority playing field and the demolition of the existing doctors' premises.
Phase 2: The new-build construction of a 56-bed care home for Harlow Primary Care Trust (end user), day nursery and health centre for the client, Harlow Health Centres Trust.
The construction work involved part load-bearing brick/blockwork and steelwork, with precast concrete floors and concrete tiled roof under timber trusses and a low pitched metal composite roof system over the health centre. The care home also features a roof terrace.
The care home is predominantly a three-storey structure with two lifts, catering kitchen, laundry facility, common areas, together with administration and staff facilities. The external works included car parking and separate gardens for rehabilitation and EMI patients as well as a day nursery.
During the construction period, Rydon ensured that the existing day nursery remained in use until the new facility was handed over.
