Ferrier Point comprised the £8.5 million refurbishment scheme of a 23-storey tower block in Canning Town. 

The scheme formed part of the overall £3.7 billion regeneration of Canning Town and Custom House being promoted by the London Borough of Newham.

The refurbishment included the installation of new kitchens, bathrooms and central heating systems. The whole block was clad in insulated rainscreen cladding and new triple glazed windows incorporated within. The external elevation was also made up of 375m² of photovoltaic cells to provide free power to the building. 

Approximately 50% of the south façade of the building was covered in the electricity-generating cells, with the renewable energy source generating power for the building’s communal electrical supply.

A steering group made up of residents was consulted in the early stages of planning to ensure the designs were well received. Ferrier Point totals 115 homes, 30 of which were initially left void in anticipation of the works. Current residents remained in occupation whilst the works were carried out.

The Rydon site team was awarded the Silver National Site Award from the Considerate Constructors Scheme for their work on the project.

Headmistress of the Kier Hardy Primary School, adjacent to Ferrier Point, commented on the Rydon team’s visit to the school:

“In a fun and interactive way, the Rydon team dealt with the children’s natural curiosity and dispelled the mystery about what happens behind the building site hoardings whilst pointing out the dangers of going onto a building site. The children thoroughly enjoyed the session and especially seeing their artwork decorating the hoarding nearby.”
