Contract Name: Monkton Combe School Art and Design Technology Centre
Contract Period: 36 weeks
Architect: South Gloucestershire Council, Property Services
Client: Monkton Combe School, Bath

After successfully delivering a new music centre for Monkton Combe School, along with the refurbishment of a number of existing buildings to create rehearsal rooms, Rydon is now delivering a major extension and refurbishment of the school’s Art and Design Technology Centre, which will also significantly improve the visual appearance.

The development will provide this renowned independent boarding and day school in Bath much needed additional capacity, responding to the growing demand from students who are choosing these subjects. It will also improve safety and opportunities for students, including exhibition space and storage rooms.

Work to this project is underway and is expected to be completed in September 2015.

Completed in 2013, the music centre involved significant challenges, including the need to work in the middle of the operational school, including during examinations at different times in the academic year, and amongst a variety of listed structures in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

This great need for a sensitive approach by the contractor led to Rydon being selected on the scheme.

The building itself is situated on piled foundations and is constructed using Bath stone and structural glazing.  The finishes to the scheme are of the highest quality and of the necessary acoustic integrity to establish independent practice rooms, a professional quality recording studio and a large rehearsal area.
