North Bristol NHS Trust appointed Rydon on a £3.5m project to create two new cancer care & support centres at Southmead Hospital Bristol.

The Bristol Breast Care Centre was the first of its type in the area, providing screening, diagnosis and after-care support. A new Macmillan Wellbeing Centre also forms part of the scheme, providing emotional, practical and financial support for people affected by any type of cancer, their families, friends and carers.

The centres occupy one of the hospital’s original workhouse buildings ‘Beaufort House’ that date back to the early 20th Century. Rydon reconfigured and extended the historic building and additionally carried out remodelling works to an existing administration centre at the hospital.

Clinical staff and patients were consulted on the designs, which brought a modern, bright and comfortable environment, split into distinct areas with exits into private courtyard spaces.

Key features of the scheme include a modern, bright and comfortable environment making the most of natural light views of the outside; dedicated exits through courtyards for patients following consultations to enable greater privacy and the centre will be divided into separate areas allowing direct access to the two main clinical areas without patients having to pass through one area to reach another.
